The publications of the Historical Manuscripts Commission are clearly not as well known to writers of regimental histories as they might be. They have been in process of publication for the past seventy years, and scattered about their volumes there is a great mass of information on military matters, much of which has never been utilized. The Carl H. Pforzheimer Collection of English Manuscripts comprises 1, items dating from (bulk ). The collection is dominated by manuscript newsletters addressed to Sir Richard Bulstrode (), plus letters (), documents (57), manuscripts of writings (52), and other items (4) chiefly created by English notables including Oliver Cromwell, John Donne, . They are now NLW MSS , and correspond to that collection described by J.
